Kiss of death.....

She sat there with open arms feeling so alone and vulnerable a feeling that she wasn't use to,  Shell was a woman of many words but tonight she sat in silence.  What could have caused her to change, what had made her fall into the deepest depression and despair that she has just shut down.

On the table there was a letter, a letter that had been opened and closed several times.  The letters were starting to fade from the fallen tears that Shell had shed, this letter brought nothing but heartache and loneliness.  The later was dated July 15th and as we sit here it is now in the cold nights of December.  5 months had passed right before her eyes but she didn't care.

Let's rewind it to 1 year ago, Shell was at her peak as a well known lawyer.  She had made partner at the beginning of the year and had celebrated almost every night.  She didn't know that this happy moment would change her in the following year.  She broke bread with some the highest paid athletes, she had some of the finest wine with artist that have traveled around the world.  Shell was a tall slender white woman with a head full of blonde locks, she had these almond shaped blue eyes and full lips that graced the rim of several night caps.  She wasn't married nor did she have children, she was well spoken and took care of herself.  She let her hair down and one night she strayed away from a night out and ended up in this small little bar around the corner from her upscale roof top apartment that over looked the city.

She walked in and noticed that it was quiet and peaceful, she sat down at the bar and ordered a drink.  The bartender was this middle aged man, who stood about 5'8 and weighed about 210 lbs.  As he poured her drink he asked her, so what brings you in here tonight Ms... she responded with no Ms. just call me Shell.  And to answer you Mr...he said Mike just Mike.  Well Mike I was on my way home and wanted a drink so here I am having a drink.  I don't often get time alone so this is nice, she sat there and enjoyed some laughs and spoke about her nights prior.  Mike was in impressed that a woman with such importance was sitting just having a nice time.

Shell noticed it was late and decided to walk home, she literally was 1/2 a block away.  Mike asked to walk her home, she felt safe so she said sure.  As she opened the door, Mike whispered in her ear nice to meet you Shell then he walked away.  She smiled and this was something new, other men would try to kiss her or ask to come in but Mike was different.  For several weeks she found herself in this dark little bar and then being walked home by Mike.

Things started to feel a little more than just friends and on this night she decided to invite Mike in, he welcomed her invitation and they sat on her couch and talked for hours.  Shell finally made her move she kissed Mike, he kissed her back and it started to get hot and heavy but Mike kept telling her he has something to tell her.  She kept saying later, they walked to her room and he laid her down on the satin sheets that lined her bed.  He then looked into her eyes and said I have something to tell you before we do anything, she just smiled and said I am a big girl I know what I am doing.

That night she had several encounters with Mike, this was a feeling that she had missed and felt so good.  She let a man into her life and she was open and just felt so complete. Mike had moved away a few months after, he had to go back home to help take care of his ill brother.  They spoke everyday and Shell was on cloud 9.

One day Shell wasn't feeling well almost flu like but her body aches were no joke at the same time she also was having some acne issues.  She noticed some blister like bumps by her right ear but she thought that it was from the high fever that she was now having.  She called her doctor and had an appointment later that afternoon, she slept and noticed that Mike hadn't been talking much.  Shell walked into her doctors office where she looked in the mirror and she looked aged and tired.  Her doctor ran test and told her to stay home and continue to keep her fluids up and to take the antibiotic that she prescribed her.  We should have your results within the next few days.  For the next 2 days Shell felt like a bus had hit her, she continued to work from home but was in no shape to walk into a court room.  All she could do was think about Mike and his brother, maybe something happen maybe they are in the hospital and he can't get a hold of her.  She called him but the phone just rang and she left what felt like the 50th message.  Mike its me Shell please call me back, I have been so sick and just would love to hear your voice.

Finally a call back from Mike but it wasn't Mike, it was a woman by the name of Sherri.  Sherri was Mike's younger sister and she had told Shell that Mike was sick and that when he could call her he would but for now he needs his rest.  About an hour passed and her doctor called Shell have you received your results, she then realized that she hadn't checked her mail.  Still with her doctor on the phone she reached into her mail box where she found her results and a letter from Mike, she didn't know what she wanted to open first but her doctor asked did you get them.  She replied yes, lets see what these results are about, her doctor asked her to sit down before she opened them.

Now worried she sat down and opened her results, there were numbers and blood counts and a lot of medical terms that she didn't understand but there it was.  She sat there with a puzzled look and read these 3 simple letters HIV and then positive right next to it.  Tears began to run down her face, she couldn't hear anything but a shallow ...Shell are you there..Shell...she then hung up the phone.  She wanted to run to Mike, she needed him.  So then she opened his letter and it started once you get this, I would have been gone.. she dropped to her knees and cried.  The person she fell in love with had given her the kiss of death.

Mike had passed away, he didn't leave to take care of his ill brother he left so Sherri could take care of him.  Shell's world was shaken so hard that this is what changed her, she was so  sick and sad and lost just about everything.  She asked herself all the time was this what he wanted to tell me, why didn't I let him.  Shell just sat in her cold apartment and waited for death to pick her up, this is what had changed her......the kiss of death.
